The second highest peak on this Black Mountains loop, but easily a more dramatic top than the slightly taller Waun Fach that you have just passed to get here.

Waun Fach looks lower and you get great views of it from the ascent of Pen y Gadair Fawr.

The path from Waun Fach to Pen y Gadair Fawr is very well maintained and makes for easy walking – irrespective of how bad the weather is. The ascent is very gentle until the last section, which is steeper but still easy.

The summit is marked by a large cairn that is photogenic, especially with the broad views in every direction.

The ridgeway walk after this point is a little bit less defined for a while, and quite boggy, but the views South are great.
