Access to Y Gyrn is very easy and the walk from the upper Storey Arms car park is about a mile, with only just over 600ft of ascent. This would be a very child-friendly mountain to climb as the distance is short, the height gained not much and the paths are clear and easy.

I took the reddish path up that takes you directly towards Corn Du, so the views of that summit and Pen y Fan are constant and clear. When you reach the crest of the ridgeway you will find a rough track heading left to the summit of Y Gyrn. You can take a more direct route up, which takes you on a diagonal trail right from the gate next to Storey Arms – however, to make it more of a loop I took the gravel track up and the diagonal grassy track down.

Following the path along the ridgeway leads you parallel to a fence, the summit of Y Gyrn is marked by a small pile of stones with a piece of wood poking up from it. This is on the other side of the fence to the path I was on.

This is definitely a mountain you can easily tick off if you were heading towards Pen y Fan or Corn Du and provides a different perspective on those two mountains than the main track up to them from the lower Storey Arms car park.

As the loop I did was only two miles, it is probably worth walking on to at least Corn Du afterwards, unless, like me on this occasion, you were just looking for a quick and easy summit.
