At 457m high Rhymney Hill is the 4th highest point in Caerphilly and sits above Bryn Bach Park. I took a circular route up from Bryn Bach Park – which meant not a great deal of ascent was needed – but the footpaths were not well marked and I kind of just wandered towards the summit and zagged back to the lake afterwards.
The summit is gentle and easy walking with open moorland and quite a few tracks around. I didn’t see anyone anywhere near the summit on my walk, so I imagine it is normally fairly peaceful – the Brecon Beacons are not that far away so this is probably overlooked in favour of an actual mountain.
The highest point is marked by a small pile of rocks – and you might need to check your OS map on your phone if you have one to make sure you are at the right pile of rocks as I saw more than one.
I followed the track from the top East, dropping down the other side through various fields that have stiles over fences and worked my way North and then West towards the far end of Bryn Bach Park lake. I was then able to walk alongside the lake back to the car.
