If you’re doing the famous Horseshoe walk in the Brecon Beacons, and you’re doing it anti-clockwise and are prepared to detour right, then Waun Rydd will possibly be the first mountain you come to. You can, prior to Waun Rydd, drop down to Allt Lwyd – which we did – and this means you’ll do seven mountains instead of the more standard 5 or 6.
On the approach to Waun Rydd you get some of the best views of the Beacons, looking over to Fan y Big, Cribyn, Pen y Fan and Corn Du.
You get good views back to Carn Pica and down to Talybont Reservoir and the pointed hill of Tor y Foel.
The summit is marked by a small rock pile, views are impressive in every direction, but the summit is not very dramatic.
