A nice little walk this if you park in the car park above, it will take you less than 10 minutes to get to the top of Mynydd Rudry if you just wanted to do a quick up and down.
The route above takes in the smaller hill of Pen Castell y Van by following clear pathways that exist, but that are not marked on the map. The whole area is riddled with paths you can take and there are a couple of other parking spots that give good access as well.
The hill would be an easy one to complete with kids in tow and the views are decent enough – at 222m high you have pretty decent elevation for this far South.
There are a lot of other hills nearby that you can see including: Mynydd Machen, Pen-rhiw Tip, Caerphilly Common, Craig Llysfaen, Cefncarnau and you are not that far from Penhow and even Craig Ruperra.
Due to the sheer number of footpaths and generally easy walking this is a good stop for an evening walk and something a bit different to the nearby Caerphilly Common that is even more popular.
