I parked at a small car park at the Silent Valley Nature reserve and it was quiet on a Wednesday evening – only one other car and I only saw a couple of bikers on the whole walk. The walk starts through woodland trails and crosses a stream, running parallel for a while.
The ascent zig zags and is relatively gentle because of this – but you are definitely going to feel it as it is a descent amount of ascent covered quite quickly.
The footpaths are easy to follow, but you’ll see from my route that there were clear walking trails that offer a more direct route up to the summit.
These walking trails are wide grassy tracks and the track nearest the summit is wide enough to fit a couple of busses down, worn away in places by motorbikes.
The summit is marked by a white trig point with red Welsh dragon and is set amongst gentle heather and grass so you can easily wander across to it.
The route back is easy to follow, although my exact route required climbing a couple of gates as the stiles are no more, but it is a public footpath.
This was a really nice walk with great views in every direction and some really good walking paths. This is my favourite Blaenau Gwent hill by quite some distance so far, and I only have two hills left to do to complete the county – Twyn Ceilog and Bryn-serth.
