If you drive North on the A4054 from Edwardsville you’ll be able to track a track on your right that takes you diagonally through the forest and up onto the ridgeway. Here you can park quite easily – but beware that the road has only a few passing points and they are often quite far apart, so meeting cars coming the other way would not be ideal. I did this walk on a Monday evening and only saw one other car the whole time.

The road up makes for easy walking and definitely a hill you can do after heavy rain. | Tamron Adaptall SP 24-48 @ 24mm, f11.

From the parking spot I headed North first along the road (which is not accessible by car, it is gated off just past the place I parked) which offered a gradual ascent along the ridgeway. I’d read reports that fly-tipping was a big issue and I could see remnants, but it appears that the council is working hard to tackle the problem. I think several dropbags full of rubbish were ready to be taken away – unless these had been dropped by tidier-than-usual fly-tippers.

It is very frustrating that people drive to such remote spots to dump rubbish, in an ideal world fly-tippers would be hunted for sport and shot. It seems to me that this is a countryside sport we could all get behind and would give frustrated fox-hunters a better outlet for their desire to kill innocent creatures.

Anyway, the odd bit of rubbish aside, this is a pleasant and easy walk up the road and the summit is nicely prominent so you actually know you’re at the right spot, there are also a few rocks around on the way up, so it is not just a grassy nothingness like some other summits.

Views are good in every direction and the hill feels like a real gateway to the Brecon Beacons.
