Pen Cerrig-calch is the first mountain on a 17.4m loop around one section of the Black Mountains, part of the Brecon Beacons mountain range. This mountain, due to its location, can be walked as a simple up-and-down but it makes more sense to continue along the ridgeway to the other 6 mountains on the route above as the hardest ascent is definitely getting up to Pen Cerrig-calch.

The walk is on good paths that are easy to follow and the views as you make the ascent back to the Sugar Loaf make any pauses to rest a good chance to take some photos. There is also the interesting mini-summit of Table Mountain that you can take in on the way up.

The walk from Table Mountain up to the summit of Pen Cerrig-calch has a steep section, but once you get past that you are able to stroll along the flat top to the trig point to take in the views.

Views are impressive and on a clear day you can see the Brecon Beacons and Pen y Fan – on the day I walked it these were shrouded in cloud and rain.

This is an easily accessible mountain and if you want a quick walk from near Crickhowell, this is highly recommended.
