This is a nice, fairly gentle, circular walk around Parc Penallta taking in all of the highlights – the ponds, the Pit Pony, the highest point and Penallta Rocks.
The walk starts on a large tarmac path / cycle route and takes you past some nice ponds down to a bridge that crosses a railway line.
This takes you to the main cycle route that you can follow for miles in each direction – it is signposted so you can see how far certain towns are to walk to. You can do this circular walk in either direction, but I went left on this path to take in the ponds and do a quick loop around them.
I then head upwards and break right to walk over the Pit Pony that has been created on the landscape. It is here that you leave the main tracks and walk on some grass / mud.
Once you’ve completed the Pit Pony you cut across to another path and head up towards the iron structure that marks the highest point of the walk.
Great views in every direction here, and plenty of places to sit and take it all in.
I then cut down towards a public footpath that takes you down to Penallta Rocks, a spectacular crag that you can explore.
Whilst Penallta Rocks is a great place to sit and watch the world go by, do beware litter and broken glass here as it is a popular place for people to have a drink.
The path down is fairly steep and made up of wooden steps so it is a nice walk. You can then head straight to the cycle path that takes you back to the car or you can cut through the woods – but that path does take you up and down a bit.
After passing some fishing ponds you’ll be able to turn left and head back over the railway and back to the car park.
