Llangynidr to Talybont-on-Usk canal walk

A nice scenic canal walk along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal from Llangynidr to Talybont-on-Usk. The route offers multiple pubs for food and drinks and facilities at the start of the walk – including toilets and a kids play park.

Canal Walking
You’ll pass under a few bridges along the way

There is free parking in Llangynidr and toilet facilities close by. The walk starts by crossing the road and heading down a public footpath through some fields which brings you to a bridge over the canal and onto the towpath. You can then follow the towpath all the way to Talybon-on-Usk.

Canal Walking
The towpath is generally clear and in good repair, suitable for cycling or prams

You will pass some pubs along the way, as well as a lock system and a few narrow boats.

Some Narrow boats

The walk is largely level, with some mild ascent at the locks section as well as the section when you leave the towpath as the canal goes through a tunnel. You walk up and over the canal and then drop down into Talybont-on-Usk.

Canal Walking
The walk is quite scenic and very peaceful with the occasional bench to pause on.

The return walk it is recommended you take the same route back. My track shows me taking the road from the pub back to the car, for most of this section there are no pavements so it is safer and more enjoyable to return along the towpath and back through the fields to the car.
