This is a great walk to the 529m summit of Mynydd Llangatwg (Twr Pen-cyrn) and then across to the wonderful Lonely Shepherd rocks. Fantastic views from the moment you park the car and throughout the walk, a truly wonderful South Wales route.
The car park has a good few spaces and situates you beneath the old quarry workings. The path is clear, smooth and grassy and gives you great views of the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains. The walk is very pleasant and you soon ascend left up onto the open moorland following a faint trail until you get the rocky ascent of the hill summit.
You can follow the trail to the large stone cairns and trig point, with stunning 360 degree views taking in the Central Brecon Beacons and the heads of the South Wales Valleys. You can then follow a small sheep trail to pick up the much wider track East to the Lonely Shepherd.
This rock formation offers great views and is very photogenic. It is a real gem of a location, well worth visiting and made better by the pleasant paths and walking to and from it.
You can then take a different track back, picking up the country lane back to the car. Not a long or difficult walk, just a gentle stroll in a beautiful part of South Wales.
