This is a nice, short and flat route through the central Valley of Ebbw Vale on good paths through a small nature reserve. You can park for free at the multistorey car park, or start from the train station if you arrive by train.
Whether you start at the multi storey car park, train station or you come down from town, you can pick up the start of the trail by headings towards the Archive building. This building used to be the general offices for the steelworks and is quite photogenic. You can pick the trail up opposite the train platform, heading South with the railway line on your left.
The path is tarmac and smooth, so perfect for wheelchair or pram access but beware dog muck as sadly the path seems to be used a lot by irresponsible dog owners. You can follow the track which takes you South down the central part of the valley, with great views of the surrounding hills and ridgeways. Mynydd Carn-y-cefn (550m high) is to your left, with y Domen Fawr (504m high) South and on your left.
You will walk under a photogenic footbridge and continue until you head straight on to a gravel track – with the tarmac track heading right and up to rejoin the road at the bottom of the hospital site. This track is still fairly flat and you could manage it with a pram and probably a wheelchair, but it can be muddy when wet in a couple of spots.
This track will loop you around a small pond, you’ll often see goldfinches on this walk and other common birds, and then you retrace your steps North back to the beginning of the trail.
It is a really pleasant walk, with great views and it feels quite peaceful most of the time. Being Ebbw Vale it can be quite cold in winter and you can often get some dramatic skies as weather systems move over the valleys.
