Forest Farm is a very popular location on the edge of Cardiff for walkers, birdwatchers and dog walkers. Parking is free and you can wander around the site as you please, following various paths and trails.
There is a bird hide by the main farm and wandering around here you can also stroll into an orchard and there is a small wildlife pond.
This trail takes you past the farm and over the feeder stream towards the two main bird hides. These are very popular with wildlife photographers, in particular because it is a great location to see Kingfishers.
Due to their proximity to Cardiff they do suffer from vandalism every now and then, with them occasionally being burnt down – so who knows if both hides will be around during your visit!
Once you’ve had your fill of wildlife you can leave the hides and continue walking along the feeder until you hit the disused canal, you can turn left here and follow the canal until you hit the road. The canal is really beautiful, especially in autumn, with all of the trees and colours reflecting in the clear waters. You’ll see plenty of ducks and wildlife along the canal as well.
Once you get to the road you can cross it and pick up another footpath that takes you left towards the River Taff. Once you get to the river you will be following the Taff Trail all the way back to the car park.
It’s a good walk, grab a camera and a drink if you’re heading to the hides or just enjoy a gentle stroll around the flat ground.
