A short round around Caerphilly Castle, which is the biggest castle in Wales and second only to Windsor in Britain.
You can park for free in Morrisons car park, but you are limited to 3 hours. This is plenty of time to walk this loop and to explore the town further if you want. The loop takes you around the castle, as long as the castle is open, if the castle is closed the loop would take you back via a road as opposed to the path inside the castle grounds.
It is a nice walk, with limited ascent and nice easy paths most of the way – although there are some steps on the castle walk as well as one small rough section inside the castle. You can buy some bird seed from a few different shops before getting to the moat where you can feed geese, swans, ducks, seagulls and pigeons. You’ll regularly see Herons and Kingfishers around the castle as well.
There are a number of places to eat and drink along the walk and you could head further up into town as well if you wanted. This route follows the moat around, crossing the bridge on one side and then entering the castle grounds where you cross another couple of bridges and walk alongside a pond.
It is a nice walk, with lots of castle views as well as good views to the surrounding hills. Caerphilly is well worth a visit, especially during the food festivals.
